Overview
Oleafly is a free, open-source desktop workspace for writing research papers, theses, resumes, and grant proposals in LaTeX, Typst, and Markdown. It brings writing, source discovery, citation management, and document preview together in one place, so you spend less time on busywork and more time on the actual content.
Key Features
- Multi-format writing: Author documents in LaTeX, Typst, or Markdown within a single workspace.
- Built-in compilation: Compile projects with the bundled Tectonic engine or your own system TeX distribution (pdfLaTeX, XeLaTeX, LuaLaTeX), with auto-compile, syntax checking, and configurable error handling.
- Citations and references: Search sources, manage bibliographies, and keep references organized alongside your draft.
- Project structure tools: Navigate a source tree, outline, and project map to jump between sections, figures, tables, and equations.
- Diagrams and figures: Create diagrams and visuals without leaving the editor.
- Versions and Git: Track revisions and work with Git-based version control.
- Export options: Export your work as PDF, Word (.docx), HTML, Markdown, plain text, or a source archive (.zip).
- Optional AI assistant: Connect your own API key (OpenAI, Anthropic, Groq, and others) or run a local model with Ollama to revise sections, generate figures, or fix broken builds, with reviewable changes.
- Local-first and private: Projects stay in ordinary files you own, and no account is required. The editor works with or without AI.
Who It's For
Oleafly suits students, researchers, and academics who write technical documents and want a lightweight, privacy-friendly alternative to heavier publishing toolchains. It is also a good fit for anyone who prefers plain files and open-source software over locked-in cloud editors.
