What it is
Em Dash Remover is a free, browser-based tool from AI Remover From Text that treats the em dash as punctuation doing a job rather than a character to be deleted. Instead of replacing every dash with the same substitute, it reads each one in context and offers the repair that fits the sentence.
How it works
Paste your text and the tool reports your em dash density per 1,000 words, normalised so document length does not distort the figure. That number is set against measured baselines: a human control at 3.23, GPT-4.1 at 10.62, and pooled published prose at 6.43. Each dash is then classified by role — number range, interrupted speech, attribution, paired aside, list introduction, abrupt turn, or general break — and given a default repair. Paired asides move as a single decision because two dashes bracketing one clause are one construction.
What it keeps
Ranges like 2020–2024 are correct typography and stay untouched. A dash cutting off dialogue mid-sentence stays, because the interruption is what the mark means. Attributions under quotations stay. The tool counts what you kept as well as what it changed, since a report that only counts removals quietly argues that removal is always the win.

Good to know
